Glossary of CVO Terms
Mainline
Sorter
A Mainline Sorter System sorts suspected overweight vehicles from
those within weight regulations at highway speeds right on the mainline.
Only vehicles that are suspected of being out of compliance are
signaled to enter the weigh station. Vehicles can be signaled by
Variable Message Signs (VMS) which sign each driver individually
and/or by AVI (Automatic Vehicle Identification) if the vehicle
is equipped with a valid transponder.
Ramp
Sorter
The Ramp Sorter System sorts vehicles on the weigh station entrance
ramp. Static signs upstream of the weigh station indicate that all
trucks need to report to the weigh station. The ramp typically separates
into two lanes downstream of the WIM sensors. One lane is to bypass
the weigh station and one is for reporting to the static scale.
Just before this separation, traffic signals alert the truck driver
of which lane should be entered.
Vehicle
Weights and Dimensions
This sorter configuration determines if a vehicle is in violation
based on the truck's weights and dimensions only. The vehicle's
credentials are not used in the sort decision.
Vehicle
Weights, Dimensions and Credentials
This sorter configuration allows for sorting of trucks based on
the vehicle's weights, dimensions and credentials. Please note that
the system will still have the capability to sort by weights and
dimensions only.
